The Perils of Young Romance: Relationship Violence Among Young Adult Couples

Relationship violence is linked with a host of negative outcomes for women and men. Prior research indicates that young adults are at the greatest risk for experiencing violence at the hands of their romantic partners, although the actual prevalence of relationship violence is difficult to assess. Notably, questions about relationship violence are generally only asked of one partner in a relationship, likely underestimating the problem.

Child Trends' latest research brief, Relationship Violence Among Young Adult Couples, used data collected in 2001 from both women and men to examine physical relationship violence and threats of physical violence among heterosexual young adult couples in the U.S. Specifically, our researchers analyzed reports from both partners in married, cohabiting, and longer-term dating relationships to identify relationship characteristics that are linked to violence among young adults. For example, cohabiting young adult couples reported the highest levels of relationship violence (compared with married and dating couples), regardless of other relationship characteristics. (Please recall that, for this study, the term "relationship violence" refers only to physical violence, such as pushing, throwing something, hitting, kicking, or inflicting an injury, and threats of violence).

Relationship violence also tended to be higher among:

· Young adult couples with lower levels of education,

· Young adult couples with children in the household, and

· Young adult married couples in which partners differ by race or ethnicity.

This brief also sheds light on the prevalence of relationship violence among these couples. Overall, Child Trends found that four out of 10 couples in this sample reported some type of physical relationship violence or threats of violence in the past year. This is considerably higher than prior estimates that rely only on the report of one partner rather than accounting for the experiences reported by both partners in a couple.

While this brief focused only on physical violence and threatening behaviors and did not include sexual or emotional violence, it nevertheless breaks new ground by using data collected from both partners in a relationship. As such, it may help identify couples at risk for relationship violence.

Supreme Court Ruling Threatens Parental Rights

Supreme Court Ruling Threatens Parental Rights

Yesterday’s Supreme Court ruling in the health care case marks a decisive turn in the American experiment of freedom. There is no doubt the opinion shocked and dismayed liberty-minded citizens across the United States. It also upped the ante on the Parental Rights Amendment – and that’s why I must urge you to help.

Let me explain.

First, the ambiguity of federal HIPAA legislation was already a problem for parental rights. It is an open door that lets states infringe a parent’s fundamental liberty to make informed medical decisions for their child. Under the health care law, this gap is only going to get worse.

Second, the health care bill allows the government to spend millions on home visitation programs in which government officials enter your home to monitor and instruct how you raise your kids.

Third, the decision has made explicit a disturbing legal doctrine long implicit in the Supreme Court: that Congress has unlimited power to tax for any purpose, even beyond its enumerated powers. This provides one more tool the government can use to control what happens in your home.

If we are to protect parental rights in America we must pass the Parental Rights Amendment soon! The PRA will provide protection for parents and families in every one of these areas of concern.

But as I said before, I must urge you to help.

As we approach the PRA’s first-ever congressional hearing, your financial support is essential. ParentalRights.org relies completely on the generosity of concerned citizens like you. Please make as generous a donation as possible today.

Sincerely,

Michael Farris
President

P.S. - Donate today to keep the Supreme Court's shifting ideologies from over-running your home!

The Constitutional Convention was in a deadlock over how large and small states could be represented equally.

Some delegates gave up and left.

Then, on JUNE 28, 1787, 81-year-old Benjamin Franklin spoke and shortly after, the U.S. Constitution became a reality.

As recorded by James Madison, Franklin stated:

"Groping as it were in the dark to find political truth, and scarce able to distinguish it when presented to us, how has it happened, Sir, that we have not hitherto once thought of humbly applying to the Father of lights...

In the beginning of the Contest with Great Britain, when we were sensible of danger, we had daily prayer in this room for Divine protection. Our prayers, Sir, were heard and they were graciously answered.

All of us who were engaged in the struggle must have observed frequent instances of a Superintending Providence in our favor...And have we now forgotten that powerful Friend? or do we imagine we no longer need His assistance?"

Franklin concluded:

"We have been assured, Sir, in the Sacred Writings, that 'except the Lord build the House, they labor in vain that build it.'...

I also believe that without his concurring aid we shall succeed...no better than the Builders of Babel."

Ben Franklin warned the Constitutional Convention, 1787, of what the future held, in his address on the Dangers of a Salaried Bureaucracy:

"Sir, there are two passions which have a powerful influence in the affairs of men. These are ambition and avarice - the love of power and the love of money...

And of what kind are the men that will strive for this profitable preeminence, through all the bustle of cabal, the heat of contention, the infinite mutual abuse of parties, tearing to pieces the best of characters?

It will not be the wise and moderate, the lovers of peace and good order, the men fittest for the trust.

It will be the bold and the violent, the men of strong passions and indefatigable activity in their selfish pursuits. These will thrust themselves into your government and be your rulers...

Besides these evils...there will always be a party for giving more to the rulers, that the rulers may be able, in return, to give more to them.

All history informs us, there has been in every state and kingdom a constant kind of warfare between the governing and the governed; the one striving to obtain more for its support, and the other to pay less.

And this has alone occasioned great convulsions, actual civil wars, ending either in dethroning of the princes or enslaving of the people..."

Franklin continued:

"We see the revenues of princes constantly increasing, and we see that they are never satisfied, but always in want of more."

The more the people are discontented with the oppression of taxes, the greater need the prince has of money to distribute among his partisans, and pay the troops that are to suppress all resistance, and enable him to plunder at pleasure.

There is scarce a king in a hundred who would not, if he could, follow the example of Pharaoh - get first all the people's money, then all their lands, and then make them and their children servants for ever..."

Franklin added:

"There is a natural inclination in mankind to kingly government.

It sometimes relieves them from aristocratic domination. They would rather have one tyrant than five hundred. It gives more of the appearance of equality among citizens; and that they like."

Ben Franklin concluded:

"I am apprehensive, therefore - perhaps too apprehensive - that the government of the States may, in future times, end in a monarchy...

A king will the sooner be set over us."

The Children's Monitor- Oversight Needed for Children’s Benefits

System Out of Touch: Helpless Parents, Defenseless Kids

System Out of Touch: Helpless Parents, Defenseless Kids
Warning: The first bullet point below (so you may skip it) contains an offense of a graphic nature not suitable for all readers.

Why are so many parents today angry with school officials? And just who is in charge of how our children are being raised? Consider:

  • In Washington earlier this month, parents were outraged to learn that the school principal had taught 10- and 11-year-old (fifth grade) students how to perform oral and anal sex. Said the superintendent, “I think the principal handled it appropriately at the time; she only gave factual information, no demonstrations.”

  • In Coney Island, New York, a principal pulled the patriotic “God Bless the U.S.A.” from the line-up of kindergarten graduation lest it prove “offensive to some cultures.” NYC schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott defended, “It’s the principal’s decision, and we support the principals.”

  • In North Carolina, an assistant principal strip searched a third grader over $20 gone missing. Sources say he wore only his t-shirt and boxers while she checked even inside the waistband of those shorts. (The $20 was found under a classroom table.) A county spokeswoman asserted, “[She] was within her legal authority, her legal right, to do the search.”

These stories reflect what happens as more and more schools believe they get to decide how best to treat and manage children. When common sense doesn’t prevail, it’s because parents don’t have enough real influence. When schools become more parent sensitive, these stories will go away.

Instead, parents are feeling pushed out of their role as decision makers for their child.

So who is right?

As each of these stories illustrates, the schools have more and more power to make these decisions for your child, with or without your consent. The law really is on their side.
In 2006, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals held in Fields v Palmdale that “the right to [family] privacy…does not entitle [parents] to prohibit public schools from providing students with information that the schools deem to be educationally appropriate,” (emphasis added) – a decision the Supreme Court has declined to reconsider.

How can we return the sanity of parental input to and protection of our schools? How can we stop the erosion of your role as the parent in the life of your child?

The proposed Parental Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution will halt the growing intrusion of government over-reach into your parenting decisions. The Amendment clearly states, “The liberty of parents to direct the upbringing, education, and care of their children is a fundamental right,” and includes 3 more qualifying sections. An overwhelming majority of Americans “of every stripe” agree with this right (source: Zogby poll). Now it is time to enshrine it in the Constitution before it erodes even further.

To read the whole amendment and learn how you can join the movement to preserve your parental rights, visit parentalrights.org. Please act to preserve your rights – sign the petition today!

Urgent Need: Who Do You Know in Delaware?

Urgent Need: Who Do You Know in Delaware?

Delaware is on the brink of becoming the “First State” to outlaw spanking or any other form of corporal discipline of a child. In fact, under SB234, anything that causes “pain,” unless it is “by accident,” will constitute abuse and be punishable by up to 2 years in jail.

We all need to see this bill stopped.

We have alerted our supporters in Delaware, but it is not enough. SB234 has already passed the Senate and the House Judiciary Committee, and it is likely to reach the floor of the House in the next three days. This will be our last chance to halt this dangerous legislation.

On its face, SB234 would outlaw anything a parent might do that intentionally causes pain: not only a spanking or a slap on the wrist, but pulling a tooth, ordering a vaccination shot, or getting ears pierced all cause pain!

These things are not likely to be prosecuted, but a parent’s right to administer corporal discipline to a wayward child most certainly is.

Action Item
Once this is introduced in Delaware, it can be easily picked up in other states as well. We must halt it here.

If you don’t live in Delaware, you cannot effectively call the members of the Delaware House. But if you know anyone in Delaware – any individual, company, or organization – please contact them with this information.

You might visit our Delaware alert here and forward the link to anyone you know in the “First State,” or share it on Twitter or Facebook.

Please help us any way you can to halt this attack on parental rights in Delaware!

Sincerely,

Michael Ramey

American Minute with Bill Federer June 26 - United Nations charter signed, its lofty goals, and its transformation

American Minute with Bill Federer
June 26 - United Nations charter signed, its lofty goals, and its transformation

The United Nations Charter was signed JUNE 26, 1945, by 51 member nations.

With lofty goals, the name "United Nations" was coined by Franklin D. Roosevelt for countries fighting the National Socialist Workers Party (Nazi) and their axis powers. The United Nations had a goal of protecting the Jews, as FDR spoke on Justice for War Crimes, March 24, 1944:

"The United Nations are fighting to make a world in which tyranny and aggression cannot exist...In one of the blackest crimes of all history-begun by the Nazis...the wholesale systematic murder of the Jews of Europe goes on unabated...Hundreds of thousands of Jews...are now threatened with annihilation as Hitler's forces descend...

The United Nations have made it clear that they will pursue the guilty...All who knowingly take part in the deportation of Jews to their death...are equally guilty with the executioner."

On November 11, 1942, President Franklin Roosevelt complimented the Jewish Theological Seminary of America:

"If the world to emerge from the war after a victory of the United Nations is to be a world of enduring peace and of freedom, that peace and that freedom must be founded on renewed loyalty to the spiritual values...

Enemies of mankind who are arrayed in battle against us realized this, and therefore began their effort to subdue the world with an assault on religious institutions...which...taught...the dignity and worth of human personality...

In cooperation with Catholic, Jewish, and Protestant scholars...it will in time, I trust, become an increasingly powerful instrument for enlightening men of all faiths."

The day after Franklin D. Roosevelt's funeral, President Harry S. Truman told Congress, April 16, 1945:

"Our forefathers came to our rugged shores in search of religious tolerance...Within an hour after I took the oath of office, I announced that the (United Nations) San Francisco Conference would proceed...

In the memory of our fallen President...I appeal to every American...to support our efforts to build a strong and lasting United Nations Organization...with Divine guidance, and your help...I humbly pray Almighty God, in the words of King Solomon: 'Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart...'"

In April 1946, President Truman addressed United Nations delegates:

"At no time in history has there been a more important Conference than this one in San Francisco which you are opening today...We beseech our Almighty God to guide us in the building of a permanent monument to those who gave their lives that this moment might come."

The United Nations began with high hopes, as President Harry S Truman stated, March 6, 1946:

"We have just come though a decade in which the forces of evil in various parts of the world have been lined up in a bitter fight to banish from the face of the earth both these ideals-religion and democracy....founded on one basic principle, the worth and dignity of the individual man and woman.

Dictatorship...is founded on the doctrine that...men and women and children were put on earth solely for the purpose of serving the State...

The Protestant Church, the Catholic Church, and the Jewish Synagogue-bound together in the American unity of brotherhood-must provide the shock forces to accomplish this moral and spiritual awakening...Unless it is done, we are headed for the disaster we would deserve...We have tried to write into the Charter of the United Nations the essence of religion."

One of the first acts of the United Nations was to recognize Israel as a nation.

In 1953, President Eisenhower addressed the United Nations:

"The whole book of history reveals mankind's never-ending quest for peace and mankind's God-given capacity to build."

President Eisenhower's delegate to the United Nations was Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., who sent a letter to every member state, December 30, 1955:

"I propose that God should be openly and audibly invoked at the United Nations...

I do so in the conviction that we cannot make the United Nations into a successful instrument of God's peace without God's help-and that with His help we cannot fail. To this end I propose that we ask for that help."

Lodge's proposal was not acted upon.

Nevertheless, Charles Habib Malik, President of the United Nations' General Assembly, 13th Session, who helped write the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, stated in 1958:

"The good (in the United States) would never have come into being without the blessing and power of Jesus Christ...Whoever tries to conceive the American word without taking full account of the suffering and love and salvation of Christ is only dreaming.

I know how embarrassing this matter is to politicians, bureaucrats, businessmen and cynics; but, whatever these honored men think, the irrefutable truth is that the soul of America is at its best and highest, Christian."

In subsequent years, the mission of the United Nations became increasingly unclear.

Former President Herbert Clark Hoover suggested reorganizing the United Nations in a speech to the American Newspaper Publishers Association, April 27, 1950:

"I suggest that the United Nations should be reorganized without the Communist nations in it. If that is impractical, then a definite New United Front should be organized of those peoples who disavow communism, who stand for morals and religion, and who love freedom...

What the world needs today is a definite, spiritual mobilization of the nations who believe in God against this tide of Red agnosticism. It needs a moral mobilization against the hideous ideas of the police state and human slavery...

It is a proposal to redeem the concept of the United Nations to the high purpose for which it was created...It is a proposal for moral and spiritual cooperation of God-fearing free nations...in rejecting an atheistic other world."

By June 10, 1963, President Dwight Eisenhower confided to the National Junior Chamber of Commerce:

"The United Nations has seemed to be two distinct things to the two worlds divided by the iron curtain...

To the free world it has seemed that it should be a constructive forum...To the Communist world it has been a convenient sounding board for their propaganda, a weapon to be exploited in spreading disunity and confusion."
