July 26, 2011 No More Clean Plate Club:   Nutrition and Exercise in the Early Years   In a new brief, Early Childhood Policy Focus: Healthy Eating and Physical Activity, Child Trends reviews recent data and current research on nutrition and exercise habits of young children under the age of six.  A number of factors affect these habits, including personal choices by parents and children, financial constraints (such as the availability, accessibility, and cost of healthy options), and public policies. Research on these factors offers insights into ways to encourage the development of healthy eating and physical fitness habits in early childhood and beyond. It is well known by now that poor diet and lack of exercise contribute to obesity, which has been associated with higher rates of many diseases (e.g. diabetes and heart disease).  According to the most recent Healthy Eating Index, the US Department of Agriculture's measure of diet quality, children (ages 2-5) scored an average of 60 (of 100) points for healthy eating. The wide availability and variety of passive entertainment media (television, video games, computers, etc.) may be negatively affecting the level of children's physical activity.     The brief notes several ways that state and local policies support better nutrition for low-income households, such as through nutrition assistance programs and through state policies on housing and food assistance that directly affect food insecurity.  Policy makers might also consider improving access to healthier foods in state- and federally-funded food programs, and improving neighborhood access to healthier food choices and to safe, affordable exercise options.   About the Early Childhood Highlights Series... The Debt Ceiling and the PRA You’re probably tired of hearing about the debt by now, but did you realize the proposed Parental Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution will help keep us out of worse trouble in the future? The United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) has been used internationally to urge nations to spend more on their children’s programs, and the CRC Committee has in multiple instances faulted a country for not investing more of its gross domestic product (or GDP) in child aid programs. The Committee has held these nations to be out of compliance with the treaty’s demands – including Moldova, the poorest nation in Europe, which was urged in 2009 to “further increase budget allocations for the implementation of the rights recognized in the Convention.” Such criticisms may fall on deaf ears elsewhere in the world, but if we were to ratify the CRC here, “the judges in every State [would be] bound thereby,” regardless of any law or state constitutional provisions to the contrary (U.S. Constitution, Article VI). That means our own courts would be constitutionally bound to correct whatever the Committee says is out of compliance with the treaty. So imagine if we had ratified the CRC last year. Added to the already deafening clamor of voices demanding various expenditures not be touched by Congress, our courts would likely be demanding an increase in federal funding of children’s programs to fulfill treaty obligations under the CRC. The Parental Rights Amendment will prevent ratification of that treaty and preserve our national sovereignty. At a time when our Congress has been spending way too much already, the last thing we need is the international community (backed by our own courts) demanding that they spend even more! Action Item While we await introduction of the Amendment, we urge you to take up one or more of the challenges we have already presented to you – especially to host a car wash, yard sale, or other event that doubles as a petition drive. Mom convicted in son’s jaywalking death: ‘This will never end for me’

A Marietta, Ga., mom who was convicted of jaywalking after her 4-year-old son was run over and killed in a hit-and-run said on the Today Show that the worst part of going to jail would be the separation from her two remaining kids.

Raquel Nelson was convicted of homicide by vehicle and reckless conduct by a jury and faces sentencing tomorrow. She can receive up to a three-year jail sentence, six times the stretch that Jerry Guy--who admitted to drinking before running over Nelson's son, A.J.--served.

"I think to come after me so much harder than they did him is a slap in the face because this will never end for me," she said. "It's three years away from the two that I have left."

Nelson also said that the jury had "never been in my shoes," because each of them answered that they had never taken public transportation before. Nelson, who doesn't have a car, was three-tenths of a mile away from the nearest crosswalk when her bus dropped her off at the stop across the street from her apartment with her three children. She decided to cross with her kids rather than remain outside any later at night, she said. (You can read more about her case here.)

"We are just hoping as a family that [the judge] is compassionate and lets my niece remain with her other children," Nelson's aunt Loretta Williams said. Nearly 75,000 have signed an online petition in support of Nelson.

Imagine you had a pesky neighbor who somehow took out a mortgage on his house in your name and by some legal trickery you were obligated to pay for it. Imagine watching this neighbor throw drunken parties, buy expensive cars, add more rooms to the house, and hire dozens of people to wait on him hand and foot. Imagine that he also managed to take out several credit cards in your name. One by one, he would max them out and then use your good name and credit to obtain another credit card, then another and then another. Each time, this neighbor would claim that he needed the new credit card to pay interest on the other maxed out credit cards. If he defaulted on those cards, your credit score would be hurt and when you wanted to buy something for yourself, it would be more difficult to get a loan and the interest you paid would be higher. Imagine that you mulled this over, and time after time, said nothing as he filled out more credit applications so he would not have to default on the other debt taken out in your name. Meanwhile, another shiny new Mercedes appears in his driveway. At what point do you think you might get tired of this game? And, even though you are left with no really good options, do you think you might eventually tell him to go ahead and default, just stop spending your money!

In 1567, Spanish Explorer Juan Pardo traveled inland from America's eastern coast and passed through a Native American village named "Tanasqui."

A century and a half later, British traders encountered a Cherokee town named Tanasi.

In 1796, Tennessee's Constitutional Convention approved its State Constitution, the U.S. Congress accepted it, and President George Washington signed the bill admitting Tennessee into the Union as the 16th State.

Tennessee's Constitution, Article XI, Section III, stated: "All men have a natural and indefeasible right to worship Almighty God according to the dictates of their own consciences."

Though Article XI, Section IV, stated: "No religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under this State," Article VIII, Section II, stated: "No person who denies the being of God, or a future state of rewards and punishments, shall hold any office in the civil department of this State."

Tennessee was home to Davy Crockett and Sam Houston, who helped Texas gain its independence.

After the Civil War, Tennessee was the first State readmitted to the Union, JULY 24, 1866.

President Andrew Johnson issued a Proclamation of Amnesty and Pardon to former Confederates on September 7, 1867:

"Every person who shall seek to avail himself of this proclamation shall take the following oath...'I do solemnly swear, in the presence of Almighty God, that I will henceforth faithfully support...the Constitution of the United States...So help me God.'"

Though originally called the "State of Franklin," in honor of Ben Franklin, it is said General Andrew Jackson suggested naming the State "Tennessee."

As the 7th U.S. President, Andrew Jackson warned, December 5, 1836:

"The experience of other nations admonished us to hasten the extinguishment of the public debt...No political maxim is better established than that which tells us that an improvident expenditure of money is the parent of profligacy, and that no people can hope to perpetuate their liberties who long acquiesce in a policy which taxes them for objects not necessary to the legitimate and real wants of their Government..."

Andrew Jackson continued:

"To require the people to pay taxes to the Government merely that they may be paid back again is sporting with the substantial interests of the country, and no system which produces such a result can be expected to receive the public countenance. Nothing could be gained by it even if each individual who contributed a portion of the tax could receive back promptly the same portion..."

Jackson added:

"Congress is only authorized to levy taxes 'to pay the debts and provide for the common defense and general welfare of the United States.' There is no such provision as would authorize Congress to collect together the property of the country, under the name of revenue, for the purpose of dividing it equally or unequally among the States or the people. Indeed, it is not probable that such an idea ever occurred to the States when they adopted the Constitution..."

President Jackson cautioned:

"There would soon be but one taxing power, and that vested in a body of men far removed from the people, in which the farming and mechanic interests would scarcely be represented. The States would gradually lose their purity as well as their independence; they would not dare to murmur at the proceedings of the General Government, lest they should lose their supplies; all would be merged in a practical consolidation, cemented by widespread corruption, which could only be eradicated by one of those bloody revolutions which occasionally overthrow the despotic systems of the Old World...."

President Andrew Jackson concluded:

"It was in view of these evils, together with the dangerous power wielded by the Bank of the United States and its repugnance to our Constitution, that I was induced to exert the power conferred upon me by the American people to prevent the continuance of that institution....The lessons taught by the Bank of the United States can not well be lost upon the American people. They will take care never again to place so tremendous a power in irresponsible hands."

After posting AHRP Infomail about the ever so gentle rebuke that Drs. Joseph Biederman, Thomas Spencer and Timothy Wilens received from Harvard University-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital, we received an essay from Jacob Azerrad, PhD., a clinical psychologist.

Dr. Azerrad notes--and we wholeheartedly agree:

"The real scandal perpetrated by Biederman has nothing to do with his consulting fee shenanigans and everything to do with the real life (and death) consequences of the methods now used by modern pediatric psychiatry to tag normal childhood behaviors with diagnoses - like "childhood bipolar" -- and the pediatric medical profession's complicit acquiescence to such malarkey. It has been nothing short an epic assault on our children by those who prescribe antipsychotic medications as an antidote to normal childhood behavior."

"One million children have been diagnosed with this new and controversial diagnosis - "childhood bipolar." And one million children are being treated for "childhood bipolar" disorder and more and more at younger and younger ages."

The largest Oregon state employees' union will resume contract talks with the state today, both sides still far apart but hopeful that a tentative agreement will be reached.

Service Employees International Union Local 503 is wrangling with Gov. John Kitzhaber's negotiators over pay increases and furlough days, according to the latest contract offers swapped between the two sides.

But the real make-or-break issue appears to involve health insurance. FULL STORY

I am loath that these parasites should be getting a raise at all. And I am loath that government employees even have a union.

Now would be a great time to FIRE THEM ALL. We don't need them or WANT them.

Franklin D Roosevelt said about the idea of unionizing government employees-

"... Meticulous attention should be paid to the special relationships and obligations of public servants to the public itself and to the government. All Government employees should realize that the process of collective bargaining, as usually understood, cannot be transplanted into the public service. It has its distinct and insurmountable limitations ... The very nature and purposes of Government make it impossible for ... officials ... to bind the employer ... The employer is the whole people, who speak by means of laws enacted by their representatives ...

"Particularly, I want to emphasize my conviction that militant tactics have no place in the functions of any organization of government employees. Upon employees in the federal service rests the obligation to serve the whole people ... This obligation is paramount ... A strike of public employees manifests nothing less than an intent ... to prevent or obstruct ... Government ... Such action, looking toward the paralysis of Government ... is unthinkable and intolerable."

Congress enacted the National Labor Relations Act ("Wagner Act") in 1935 - the Magna Carta of the American labor movement. It excluded federal, state and local employees.

Years ago, SEIU had a sign that said "Public Services you can Count On". I re-did that sign to read "Public Services you can DREAD".

The mass overmedication of foster children with psychiatric drugs

(NaturalNews) For a long list of reasons, the day-to-day life of a child in foster care can be challenging. Foster parents are often stretched thin and overburdened, foster children often wrestle with emotional issues that can go misdiagnosed, unrecognized or misunderstood, and qualified medical care for this vulnerable population is constantly in short supply.

These challenges are now being compounded by an additional concern: the over-administration of psychotropic drugs. Psychotropic medications are intended to combat or ease the symptoms of behavioral and mental health problems, but among children in foster care, these drugs are being prescribed at excessive levels and often for inappropriate reasons.

According to a recent study conducted by researchers at the Tufts Clinical and Translational Science Institute, about 4 percent of the general youth population has received prescriptions for these drugs during the past decade. By comparison, the numbers for children in foster care fall between 13 and 52 percent. This study corroborates the findings of similar studies conducted in Texas and Georgia during the same time period.

There are several debatable factors that can explain the disparity in prescription rates between children in foster care and the general youth population. While foster children may appear to suffer from a higher rate of behavioral and mental health concerns, many of these behavioral issues arise as a natural response to trauma and domestic stress, and are being improperly diagnosed as mental health disorders.

I left a nice comment there-

On the percentage of kidnapped kids in state custody- 13 to 50 percent seems too low to me. I would put it at 99 percent to 400 percent.

Four hundred percent? Yes, because they have a lot of these kids on MULTIPLE drugs at the same time. Up to 7 or 8 different kinds of dope. FULL DOSE OF EACH DOPE-- ALL AT THE SAME TIME.

And by the way, hardly worth mentioning, MOST of the dope is approved for OVER 18 years of age ONLY.

But since that would massively reduce the amount of FRAUD they can collect from Social Security and Medicare, the under 18 thing can be waived. I guess.

If you wanted to cut the Federal Budget by about a third of a trillion, CPS and their colluding contractors would be a GREAT PLACE to cut. In fact most of them belong in prison for their Federal Crimes (several of which are capital crimes against families under the Color of Law).

Report: Foster teens fall through cracks, cost to society called 'tremendous'

Every year in the United States, nearly 28,000 children age out of the foster care system without having any permanent family ties.

A new report released Thursday concluded that a large number of those young adults are left without adequate services, resources or support systems to allow them to become productive citizens.

"The cost to society is tremendous," said Adam Pertman, executive director of the New York-based Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute, which released the report.

To reduce the number of those who remain in the system until adulthood, the report recommends that human service agencies work harder to achieve permanent homes for older children who enter the system.

"It is a disturbing trend that more and more young people are aging out of care without any permanent connections," the report concludes. "Every youth who emancipates without reunification or permanency is a youth society has failed."

When that happens, Mr. Pertman said, too often those young adults don't have access to education or jobs. They have a higher rate of unwanted pregnancy and are more likely to engage in criminal behavior.

"It costs us money," Mr. Pertman said. "It costs society far more in the long term than to invest in doing it right now and reap the benefits of it."

Mr. Pertman, however, also believes Americans are, generally, bad at long-term investment.

"We as a culture give a lot of lip service to children being our future, but in most states, in tough economic times, one of the first cuts we make is to children," Mr. Pertman said. "They become invisible. They don't vote. They don't lobby."  And they don't know they can SUE.

Psychiatrist Joseph Biederman and two of his proteges, Thomas Spencer and Timothy Wilens--who for over a decade aggressively promoted the biopolar diagnosis and use of antipsychotics in children, while receiving millions from the manufacturers of these drugs, were disciplined by Harvard University and its affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital--which is more than the National Institute for Mental Health did.

The three wrote a mea culpa letter stating "we want to offer our sincere apologies..." acknowledging "our mistakes..."

However, no mention about the harm to children...and, strangely, not a murmor from the National Institute for Mental Health, which had awarded these disgraced psychiatrists millions of dollars at taxpayers expense.

National Public Radio reported that NIMH would not indicate whether it even conducted an investigation!

Evidently, NIMH officials did not see fit to even conduct an investigation into the corruption of science and violation of federal regulations. This demonstrates an absence of professional and moral integrity at the NIMH, whose administrators think nothing about the misappropriation of public money for commercially-driven, junk research.
