Idaho House targets children's rights treaty

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Lawmakers in the Idaho House passed a resolution to support a constitutional amendment that aims to protect parental rights.

The measure targets a global children's rights treaty the United States has yet to ratify. But Idaho lawmakers are among critics who are so alarmed they are supporting a constitutional amendment that says parents have a "fundamental right" to raise their children without government interference.

The resolution says the treaty "would drastically alter this fundamental right of parents to direct the upbringing of their children."

Several lawmakers said they were reluctant to support constitutional changes to get the job done, but House Majority Leader Mike Moyle called on the chamber to send a message.

The resolution passed on a 49-20 vote and now goes to the Senate. FULL STORY
