Raising a child without a barrel of money

Over 17 years the expense is close to a quarter of a million dollars

For those who have children, or are thinking of having children in 2011 start saving money because children are expensive. One child born in 2011 can cost an estimated $226,000 over the course of their lifetimes. That’s about $12,000 per year or $1,000 per month per child.

ONTARIO, Oregon— A June 2011 study released by the United States Department of Agriculture noted families with a child born in 2010 can expect to pay, on average, $1,000 per month as they raise that child to age 18.

The study, entitled “Expenditures on Children by Families,” said a family will pay roughly $226,000 to raise a child. USDA.gov. said that figure, factored over 18 years, is $12,000 per year, for one child, or $1,000 per month. FULL STORY

I am tempted to write quite an essay on this subject. But it is simpler to point out the $1000 per month figure to raise a child is rather absurd.

Even more absurd is the proffering of the communist new age "village to raise a child" concept.

I am guessing that this version of child rearing presupposes complete inability to be self-sufficient, incapable of growing and long term storage of food, and total incompetence in economical life styles.

Which is what being an American used to be about.
