Legally Kidnapped
It has come to my attention that some people, and I'm not pointing out anyone in particular, but some just don't understand the universal mentality and understanding that the normal people share in regards to the issues related to child abuse, child protective services, foster care, adoption, etc. They don't understand how the child protective industry gets away with what they do. Further more, they don't understand that society basically demands it of them.
You see, in order to do this blog, I must sift through tons of pro-CPS bullshit articles that glorify foster parents, bash every parent involved with the system in any way, exploits the worst possible cases of child abuse, and this is most of the news that comes across the wires. Most of it comes from the Public Relations departments, and the fact that reporters like the juicy horrific and emotional stories that make the front pages and prompt the consumer to buy the paper.
So lets take a special look at some of these articles, and answer the question: How do they manufacture public support for the evil Child Protective Industry?
Step 1: Create The Need by raising awareness of child abuse
Also note that these cases become the public's understanding of the issue, so that when they hear the words child abuse and neglect horrible images of horrific cases just pops into their heads. In many of these cases the child obviously should be protected, but that's not suggesting that you destroy the family.
Step 2: Propose Solutions that the public will buy into, dependent on presentation of course.
Step 3: Glorify the people working to solve the problems. (Also helps to suck more people in.)
Step 4: Marketing the product and job.
See, overall most of these articles don't extend beyond a small localized area. A story from Utah doesn't usually end up on the front page of the Boston Globe or the LA Times. So when a foster parent is accused of sexual abuse or a child dies in foster care and it hits the airwaves, it's rather shocking to the people of the community where the crime has taken place. They thought these people were all angels and pillars of their community like it said on TV. So it's not that normal people are stupid, in fact they are of perfectly average intelligence and are being taught bullshit.
Of course the regular readers of Legally Kidnapped know that these things happen all the time. The normal people do not. That's why it's so important to spread awareness. You're average Joe just don't know, nor will they care because "it could never happen to them." They wouldn't believe that this kind of fraud and corruption would ever take place in their part of the world.
Generally the dose of reality comes only with the experience of having a social worker preform a state sponsored anal probe on you. For most, I believe, that's a rather shocking experience too. It was for me as the first worker I ever met was a sadistic bitch who got off on the power trip. I myself used to believe that protecting children from abuse and neglect were all these wonderful people did. I had to learn just like the rest of you.
Oh, and it can happen to you.

Couple allowed limited visitationThe thing about these articles is that they are all similar in the sense that they are very severe in nature. What you never see in the news is the thousands of cases where the alleged abuse and neglect is minimal in comparison, or the cases where a parent simply needed a little help or education, yet they get screwed to the wall anyway.

Pitchin' In: Foster Care Families in Harford CountyNow if you have read all of these links and watched both of these video's you will have had a glimpse of the universal understanding of the normal people in regards to child abuse, foster care, what have you.
If you buy into it all, you will see that
- Child abuse = only the most horrific cases.
- You will understand that there are thousands upon thousands of cases just like these.
- You will learn about all of the wonderful people involved in the protection and housing of our children.
- You will learn that only abused and neglected children end up in foster care.
One of the most damaging aspects of this is the overall rarity of the articles that I usually post to LK. That's just a drop in the bucket however. Most of these cases are swept under the rug. Hidden behind the vale of confidentiality laws. In fact, the normal people are so brainwashed into believing all of this child abuse/foster care propaganda that they are completely unaware of the problems or the negative aspects. They are unaware that these people are committing fraud. They are unaware that the system has any problems at all outside of a need for more foster parents.

It's a broken system. That's the fact of the matter. The system destroys families. The system destroys children. Those facts aren't put out there nearly enough.
Oh, and it can happen to you.
