Urgent: Last Chance to Be "Original"

Senator Jim DeMint’s office (R-SC) has indicated plans to introduce the Parental Rights Amendment (PRA) in the Senate as early as this Thursday, May 24. We believe Congressman Trent Franks’ office (R-AZ) is on a similar schedule.

The language of the PRA resolution has been approved by everyone involved, included legislative counsel in Congress, which was the final hurdle leading to introduction.

That means we have as little as two days left to secure original cosponsors to the PRA in this Congress. (After its introduction, the PRA can still accept cosponsors, but they will not qualify as “original,” a term reserved for those who sponsor the bill at the time of its introduction.)

Give Credit Where Credit Is Due

As of the posting of this email, we have 23 cosponsors in the House and 2 in the U.S. Senate. For a complete list of each, visit parentalrights.org and click on the number of cosponsors. Then, if your congressman or senator is on the list, why not send them a thank you note for their support? (To avoid inconveniencing their staff, please mail your card or at least send an email. Phone calls are not recommended for expressing thanks.) You might want to send a card to Rep. Franks or Sen. DeMint for their leadership, as well.
Call Them Again
If your lawmakers are still not cosponsors, we invite you to call them again. Tell them that time is short, and you are looking for them to add their name to this important measure. Here again is all you need to do:

1. Visit ParentalRights.org/States and click on your state. You can click the map or your state abbreviation in the right side bar.

2a. Look up your Congressman and Senators on that state page. If their name is in blue, they have already signed on. Congratulations! (Send them a letter of thanks, but please do not call their office.)

2b. If their name has a green “2010 Cosponsor” or “Pledged Support” label, please call their D.C. office and encourage them to sign on as an original cosponsor. You can use this sample message, put into your own words, when you call:

“I am a constituent, and I am grateful for (Congressman / Senator) ____’s support of the Parental Rights Amendment in 2010. (Rep. Trent Franks of Arizona / Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina) is currently accepting original cosponsors for the Amendment in this Congress, and I’d like to urge my (Congressman / Senator) to contact his office and sign on today.”

2c. If your Senator or Congressman has not shown prior support (no blue or green with their name), you can still contact them as well, but the message will need to be a little different. Here’s a sample message:

“As a constituent, I’d like to encourage my (Congressman/Senator) to take a close look at the Parental Rights Amendment, and sign on as an original cosponsor with (Congressman Trent Franks of Arizona / Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina). A 2010 Zogby poll showed that 93.6% of all Americans, regardless of party affiliation, agree with the traditional parental rights that this amendment will uphold. And I am among that vast majority. I hope I can count on (Congressman / Senator) ___ to support this vital issue as an original cosponsor and moving forward. Thank you.”

3. Check ParentalRights.org/States often to see when your Congressman and Senators come on board!

Sustain the Drive

Once you’ve called, please consider adding ParentalRights.org to your monthly budget. A $25 monthly gift would do a lot to support promotion of the Amendment in Congress. Even a $5 monthly gift will go a long way toward keeping our efforts moving forward. Or perhaps a one-time gift better fits your budget. Either way, your gift will allow us to keep up with the increased demands on our staff and resources now that the Amendment is in Congress.

Thank you again for taking time to stand for the liberty of parents to protect their children with good decisions. Only with your support can we expect to succeed!

Sincerely,

Michael Ramey
