Big jump in percentage of parents aggravated by their kids
High levels of frustration and anxiety can jeopardize effective parenting. Between 1997 and 2011/12, the proportion of parents reporting aggravation (determined by how often their children's actions bother them, how often they feel angry with them, etc.) increased by more than 50 percent. However, there was no statistically significant change nationally during the recent economic downturn. In this brief, we look at national and state-by-state trends in parental aggravation.

Children and Taxes
Last month, President Obama proposed expanding tax credits for families with kids, making the child tax credit available to working parents with low earnings and expanding the earned income tax credit for married couples and families with more than two children. These credits are aimed at lifting families out of poverty, reducing the depth of poverty, and increasing employment. Being raised in poverty places children at higher risk for a range of problems; it's related to increased risk of poor health, dropout, and eventually, lower wages. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the War on Poverty.

How parents make child care decisions

When choosing care for their children, parents must weigh their preferences in terms of language and culture with health and safety considerations, requirements for children with special needs, proximity to work or home and, of course, cost. Information from child care resource and referral and quality rating and improvement services could help parents make this tough decision, but only if parents know about and trust these services first. Our latest blog post highlights more of what parents need to know, and how to make info accessible to them.

Strategies for educational excellence

Last week, the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics and its President's Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics held a national forum on integrated student supports. Its goal was to raise awareness of the potential of integrated student supports (ISS) to increase the success of Hispanic students. Child Trends' president and senior scholar presented the results of a recent extensive study of national ISS models. ISS is a school-based approach to promoting students' academic success through coordinated academic and non-academic supports.
