Two former Cuyahoga County elected officials who had hoped to keep appointed jobs in the new county government will be replaced.

County Executive Ed FitzGerald announced that county engineer Robert Klaiber and coroner Frank Miller will not be retaining their jobs in his administration. Mr. FitzGerald also is letting go two other administrators: senior and adult services director Susan Axelrod and children and family services director Deborah Forkas.

“Part of reorganizing county government means that there will be staff changes,” Mr. FitzGerald said in a news release. “Transition plans are in place for each of the departments that are affected.”

Three people employed by Mr. Klaiber were at the heart of the county corruption scandal, and Ms. Forkas came under fire after the child welfare department failed to protect six children from fatal abuse and neglect.

Mr. FitzGerald also announced the layoff of four county workers who were members of the Service Employees International Union. The union rejected a plan by the new administration for all union members to take furlough days, as other county employees are doing, to trim spending. The layoffs are intended to make up the money that would have been saved by furlough days.

“During these tough economic times, we must make decisions based in the spirit of shared sacrifice,” Mr. FitzGerald said.  FULL STORY
