Top prescribers under Senate's microscope

In 2010, U.S. Senator Grassley asked each state in the country to provide him with a list of the top prescribers of these psych drugs: Abilify, Geodon, Risperdal, Seroquel, Zyprexa (antipsychotic drugs) and Xanax (an addictive anxiety drug). He also asked for the top prescribers of a few addictive painkillers. Now, the Senator is asking each state to tell him what happened with these high prescribers.

This is the first in a long series of stories you will see coming from many and various states.
We start off with Minnesota.

…In Minnesota, officials expect to refer other cases to the medical board as a result of the review, Godfrey wrote in the letter released Wednesday. In addition, the state found a case where state Medicaid officials weren’t aware that a prescriber had lost authority from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency to prescribe controlled substances.

Minnesota officials are reporting a handful of doctors to the state medical board for potential disciplinary action because of the amount of addictive painkillers and potent psychotropic drugs they have prescribed.
