ACTION ALERT: Important Senate Committee Vote Today
Ask Your Senator to Support Funding for the Health Resources and Service Administration’s (HRSA) Pediatric Specialty Loan Repayment Program
Your donations are more important than ever. |
Dear Leonard,
One of your Senators is a member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies (see list below). This committee will vote on the budget today for the Department of Health and Human Services, including $5 million for HRSA’s Pediatric Specialty Loan Repayment Program.
Background: President Obama’s 2013 budget allocated $5 million to HRSA to fund a pediatric specialty loan repayment program. This new program would provide loan repayment to child and adolescent psychiatrists of up to $35,000 per year, for up to two years, for those who work in a medically underserved area.
Call your Senator’s office TODAY and ask them to support the $5 million appropriation for the Health Resources and Services Administration’s Pediatric Loan Repayment Program.

There is a severe shortage of child and adolescent
psychiatrists. As more and more children are diagnosed with serious
physical and mental health conditions, the number of subspecialists
available to treat them is diminishing. The nation’s current supply of
pediatric specialists is inadequate to meet the needs of America’s children.
-
Throughout the country, children and families often face long
wait times to obtain an appointment with a child and adolescent
psychiatrist. Wait times of up to six months are not uncommon for child
mental health professionals. For a child with severe mental illness, such as depression, not receiving timely treatment can be life threating.
- To address the critical shortage of pediatric mental health and pediatric subspecialists, Congress authorized funds for a pediatric subspecialty loan repayment program through the Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA). During today’s Labor, Health and Human Services subcommittee markup, please support a $5 million appropriation to fund HRSA’s Pediatric Specialty Loan Repayment Program.
Thank you for your advocacy efforts. If we raise our voices
together, we can truly make a difference in the lives of children with
mood disorders.
