Qatari Court Releases Accused Parents on Bail

A Qatari court today allowed an American couple jailed since January to be released on bail, according to a family member. The court had previously ruled Matthew and Grace Huang would be kept in jail through their trial for starving to death their eight-year-old daughter, Gloria. The Huangs had adopted Gloria and their other two children from Africa. They deny mistreating her.

The court acted after hearing testimony about the couple's character and child-rearing and about home-schooling and multiracial families, things rarely seen in Qatar. The Huangs' supporters ascribe their plight to cross-cultural misunderstandings.

The Huangs must remain in Qatar at least until a hearing December 3rd.
