Farris Outlines Next Steps: Action Needed

The election results are going to require us to engage in both offensive and defensive tactics to preserve parental rights. There is absolutely no doubt that the internationalists are going to push extremely hard for ratification of a whole series of treaties that will dramatically reorder the relationship between parents and children. The nanny state will gain much ground under these treaties.

We must do everything we can to stop their ratification. (See “Call Blitz” below.)

And we will continue to work very hard to push the Parental Rights Amendment. Getting a two-thirds majority in both the House and Senate will be a significant challenge over the next two years, and we may have to hope for a turnaround in 2014. But we will continue to build co-sponsors for the PRA during this time, and we will take every opportunity to see the Amendment pass.

However, we also need to act to protect parental rights immediately.

State Legislation Project

State laws can help protect parental rights in very important ways, though we have to keep in mind that state laws cannot be the permanent solution because of the threat of international law.

But for the next several years, when good parents must go to court to fight for the legal recognition of their rights, we need good state laws in our legal arsenal.

I was so glad that Michigan’s Parental Rights Law of 1994 (that I had a hand in writing) was on the books when I was litigating for the Stieler family who were being prosecuted because they dared to make independent medical decisions for their son, Jacob.

There are a number of state legislatures where such statutes are politically possible. And we need to take the territory we can get for today while we keep working for the big victory in the Constitution.

We need volunteers to help us on these state projects. If you want to help protect parental rights in your state legislature, please do three things.

First, if you can lead efforts as a volunteer lobbyist to your state’s legislature, email Jonathan@parentalrights.org to volunteer.

Second, please share this email with at least five other friends. If you are on Facebook, please go to the Parentalrights.org page and “share” this message from our page to yours. Help us get the word out.

Third, going to a number of states is going to require us to pay for a number of airplane tickets and related travel expenses. If you can give, please do so now* so that we don’t have to hesitate to go when the opportunities arise. Some of you may have frequent flyer free tickets that you could donate to us. That is a bit more complicated to pull off, but we do not want to neglect good resources just because it is complicated. If you have the ability to give us free air travel tickets, please email MMcBride@parentalrights.org.

Senate Call Blitz to Halt CRPD

The “lame duck” session of Congress begins today. Internationalists are already pushing to see the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) ratified. We must let our senators know we oppose this idea.

I know I’ve already asked you to do a lot. But it is vital that we call the Senate and tell them we do not want to surrender parental rights, personal freedoms, or American self-government for a “feel-good” treaty that will forever impact American law.

Take a moment right now to call both of your senators’ D.C. offices. Numbers can be found by clicking on your state at parentalrights.org/states.

Then pass this request on to friends and family as well. We must magnify our voice against this dangerous treaty as quickly as possible, or those whose children suffer disabilities may see their parental rights signed away by the end of the year.

Our Secret Weapon

Today is not the day to shrink back or to go into hiding. Those who believe that the government is the primary human institution have made some temporary gains. But those of us who believe in the family have determination plus a secret weapon. The secret weapon is truth.

God made families to be the institution that has the primary role in the lives of children. Children are not creatures of the state. They are made in the image of God and entrusted to parents as stewards of a high responsibility.

We need to walk in confidence and with determination. We are on the right side of history and truth. Let’s work hard to protect the American family from those who want to come between parent and child.

Sincerely,

Mike Farris
