IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- An Iowa City teenager is facing sexual abuse charges for fathering a child with a 13-year-old.
Police say 19-year-old Joshua Hesseltine impregnated the girl in 2008 when she was 13-years old.
The girl gave birth to the child on July 31, 2008 when she was 14-years old and Hesseltine was 17.
Police were told of the possible sexual abuse in April of 2010. Police immediately began an investigation which included collecting DNA samples.
Hesseltine is charged with Third Degree Sexual Abuse.
According to Iowa law, a person can be charged with Third Degree Sexual Abuse when two people are not cohabitating as husband and wife and the other is suffering from a mental defect or incapacity which precludes giving consent or the other person is 12 or 13-years old.
Kids are hammered with sex encouragement all the time. And then the system comes down like a ton of bricks when they do it.
