How could someone do that to a child?

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

OHIO- When children die by adult hands - their little bodies shaken, hit, kicked and thrown - communities recoil.

How, they ask, could someone hurt an innocent baby?

Columbus Police detective James McCoskey can offer only unsatisfying answers. After more than 30 years of building cases against child killers, he knows that the explanations don't make sense to the rational.

"It's usually an immediate, aggressive loss of control," McCoskey said yesterday. "It's a flash. And then, it's done."

Child-welfare advocates have been seeing an increase in child homicides in the past few years.

According to Franklin County Children Services, there were four child homicides in the county during 2008, nine last year and at least nine so far this year.

"I don't want to give them any defense," said McCoskey, a longtime member of the Franklin County Child Fatality Review panel, which gathered for one of its regular meetings yesterday. "But the mind is a terrible thing when it's twisted."

In some cases, the abuse erupts sporadically over time, with crying "the No. 1 trigger" for unstable caregivers, he said. Eventually, there is one blow too many, or one too hard.

Other attacks might be swift and horrifically lethal.  FULL STORY

We said TEN years ago about the insane "kinder, gentler world theory of child rearing"- "We believe this generation when they become parents may be the most abusive of their children in HISTORY because of their extreme selfishness, self-centeredness, inconsideration, and complete lack of empathy and self-discipline.  Nation-wide, kids have become rebellious, troubled, DANGEROUS.  They are "The Predator Generation"- The Kids without a conscience." -What's Going On Here?
