The National Center for Adoption Law & Policy (NCALP) at Capital University Law School is a top 10 finalist in the Jump START Your Nonprofit contest from Modern Office Methods. The winning organization will receive new office equipment valued at $20,000. The second prize is valued at $10,000 and the third prize at $5,000. This is a great opportunity for us as we launch the Foster Youth Advocacy Center (FYAC). The Foster Youth Advocacy Center (FYAC) is one of NCALPs newest initiatives and will serve youth in foster care who are reaching the age of transition from foster care to independent living. These foster youth, who are generally between the ages of 16 24, are, or have been, in the custody of the State child welfare system. Foster youth in State custody typically were removed from their birth parents for reasons such as abuse or neglect, or for some other reason such as the death of a parent. These youth are much more vulnerable to negative outcomes than youth their age who are not in foster care. They frequently return to State care as adults through welfare, mental health, criminal, or other public systems. Outcomes for these foster youth are bleak as compared to those of youth in the general population, in which financial and emotional assistance from families is much more likely.   The Foster Youth Advocacy Center is working to ensure foster youth successfully transition from foster care to independence.  NCALP is a small organization with a staff of only 6 persons that is dedicated to making the lives of children better. While the Center serves an important purpose in our community, it also must raise its own funding. The Office Technology Makeover would allow NCALP to dedicate our limited resources to spend more time serving our foster youth clients, rather than purchasing office equipment and technology.
