Parental Rights and Election Day

The general election on November 6 is only 47 days away, and could launch a tremendous year for the Parental Rights Amendment (PRA).

In the current Congress, a hearing in the Constitution Subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee means the PRA advanced farther than it has before. But a late start due to concerns over the language left us with little time to see it brought to the full committee, let alone the House floor.

We are confident that will not be the case in 2013. So we are working now to maximize that opportunity, starting with Election Day.

Specifically, we are sending a pledge to every candidate in a U.S. House or Senate race across the country, and we are asking them to sign on in support of the Parental Rights Amendment.

Two years ago, we saw 32 pledge signers elected to Congress and 2 to the Senate – and even with the language change in the Amendment, a significant number of these still honored their pledge by cosponsoring the adjusted Amendment. We are hoping to see even greater success in the coming Congress.

If you have a special personal connection with a candidate in your area and can help us secure a response to our pledge, please email us at pledge@parentalrights.org. And especially if you hear of a candidate who has not received the pledge, please let us know right away!

In a couple of weeks, we will begin to host the results on our website. These updates will be available from your state page: simply click on your state at parentalrights.org/states. When Election Day rolls around, you can head to the polls knowing who does and who does not support this vital cause.

Senate Visits Update
We do not know just how many of you actually visited your Senators’ offices on Constitution Day September 17, but we are excited and encouraged by the reports we have received. I’m sure there were many visits we didn’t hear about, but the ones we did hear about – 48 so far from all over the country – were terrific. Here are a couple of samples:
“I went late in the day and several people had been there earlier in the day to express the same position, according to the senator’s staff….” – Scott in Texas

“My daughter and I had a good visit with [the staffer]…. We will be in touch with him again – he is happy to talk with us….” – Becky in Georgia

“We’re glad we made the trip. Now that we know how it works and where they are, it will make it easier to do in the future.” – Joanne in Oregon

Thank you so much to each one who took the time and effort to visit your senators’ offices. The danger is not completely past yet, and on-going calls and visits to your senators will certainly be beneficial.

But we are encouraged at this point that success can be achieved. With your help, the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities – a U.N. treaty that would gut parental rights in America – can be halted for the remainder of this Congress.

Thank you for standing with us to defend parental rights for this and future generations!

Sincerely,

Michael Ramey
Director of Communications & Research

P.S. – If you haven’t done so lately, why not share the 7-minute Overruled movie with a friend who needs to join the parental rights cause? And please give a generous donation to ParentalRights.org today to sustain our efforts into the 2013 Congress. We depend entirely on the support of donors just like you.

Because ParentalRights.org is a 501(c)(4) lobbying organization, donations are not tax deductible – but they are vital to our cause!
